Alex the African Grey Parrot

When animal psychologist Irene Pepperberg entered a Northwest Side pet shop in 1977 and purchased an obnoxious one-year-old African grey parrot named Alex She started a 30-year study that changed how we perceive the intelligence of birds. He was also capable of counting up to six sets of objects and displayed math skills that were considered advanced at the time for birds.

He could also communicate with other animals via signs and had a good understanding of grammar. He used a training method called "rival model" which involved two trainers showing the bird what they were trying to teach it. Trainers would frequently change positions to allow the bird to interact with both trainers and receive the attention of each.

After the success of Free Solo, Alex was named a National Hero by President Barack Obama in 2014. Alex was able achieve so much in his lifetime due to his strength of character and the desire to live life on his own terms.
